A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting travellers at the Shirasuka station along the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts Shirasuka, the thirty-second station along the Tokaido road. The series, titled Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, documents the journey between Edo and Kyoto. Hokusai captures the travellers at a coastal vantage point, where the geography of the region meets the daily movement of people.
The composition features a group of figures in the foreground, including a standing traveller adjusting his hat and others carrying heavy packs. Their postures suggest the fatigue of a long journey. To the left, a figure points towards the sea, where small boats are visible on the horizon. The background consists of rolling hills and stylized clouds, rendered with the characteristic economy of line found in Hokusai's early work. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft ochres, greens, and muted tones to define the coastal environment.
Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige on the same subject, Hokusai's interpretation focuses on the human element within the travel narrative. The figures are drawn with clear, expressive outlines, and the spatial arrangement creates a sense of depth without relying on complex perspective. The print serves as a record of the social and physical geography of Edo-period Japan. It reflects the popularity of travel literature and guidebooks during the nineteenth century, which encouraged the public to engage with the sights of the Tokaido route. This print is a fine example of the technical precision of the woodblock medium, showing the collaborative process between the artist, the carver, and the printer.
