This miniature painting originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a collection of fifty-two stories told by a parrot to its owner over successive nights. Produced during the early years of the Mughal Empire, the manuscript reflects the synthesis of Persian artistic traditions with indigenous Indian styles. The artist, Lalu, demonstrates the characteristic flat perspective and clear, narrative focus common to the period.

The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The upper section contains the Persian text, written in a clear Nasta'liq script, which provides the narrative context for the scene below. The lower section depicts the vizier's son seated upon a throne, engaged in conversation with the parrot held by a merchant. The figures are rendered with precise outlines and a palette of muted earth tones, contrasted by the gold-leaf background that signifies the importance of the setting.

Lalu employs a decorative approach to the textiles and the floor covering, using patterns that suggest a sense of luxury without relying on realistic shading or depth. The figures are arranged in a balanced, theatrical manner, typical of courtly illustrations intended for private viewing by the nobility. The parrot, central to the narrative, is depicted with careful attention to its form, acting as the bridge between the human characters.
