A detailed Mughal miniature painting depicting a traditional wolf-running sport in Tabriz, from an Akbar-nama manuscript.
This miniature painting originates from an Akbar-nama, a historical chronicle documenting the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Attributed to the artist Banavari, who was active during the late sixteenth century, the work depicts a lively scene of wolf-running, a traditional sport involving the pursuit of wolves by hounds. The composition is organised with a high horizon line, a common feature in Mughal manuscript illumination, which allows for the inclusion of a dense crowd of spectators and architectural elements in the background.
The scene is filled with motion. Several hounds are shown in pursuit of a wolf, while figures in traditional Mughal attire gesture and observe the activity. The architecture, featuring domed structures and crenellated walls, suggests a city setting, specifically identified as Tabriz in the accompanying Persian inscription. The artist employs a palette of earthy tones, punctuated by the brighter colours of the figures' garments, such as deep reds, ochres, and greens. The use of gold leaf adds a decorative quality to the borders and specific details of the scene.
Banavari demonstrates a command of narrative composition, balancing the chaotic energy of the hunt with the structured arrangement of the onlookers. The figures are rendered with fine brushwork, typical of the imperial workshops where such manuscripts were produced. The work provides a glimpse into the courtly pastimes of the era, reflecting the cultural synthesis of Persian artistic traditions and Indian subject matter that defined the Mughal school. The painting is a fine example of the technical precision and narrative clarity achieved by artists working under the patronage of the Mughal court, where historical documentation and artistic expression were closely linked.
