A classic woodcut by Albrecht Dürer depicting the Last Judgment, featuring Christ in majesty, interceding saints, and the division of souls.
This woodcut by Albrecht Dürer depicts the traditional iconography of the Last Judgment. Christ sits in majesty at the centre, his feet resting upon a globe. He is flanked by two angels who sound trumpets, signalling the resurrection of the dead. Below him, the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist kneel in intercession for humanity. The lower portion of the composition shows the division of souls, with the saved being led towards the light on the left, while the damned are dragged into the gaping maw of a monstrous creature on the right.
Dürer utilised the woodcut medium to achieve a high degree of tonal variation through dense hatching and cross-hatching. The lines define the muscular anatomy of the figures and the heavy folds of drapery, creating a sense of volume despite the two-dimensional nature of the print. The artist's monogram, the AD tablet, is visible at the bottom centre, a mark of his professional pride and concern for copyright protection during the early sixteenth century.
This work belongs to a period when Dürer was refining his mastery of graphic arts. His ability to render complex theological narratives within a compact frame demonstrates his technical precision. The composition balances the celestial order above with the chaotic struggle below, using the vertical axis to separate the divine realm from the earthly and infernal spheres. The print reflects the theological preoccupations of the era, where the finality of judgment was a common subject for devotional reflection. Collectors of early modern prints will appreciate the clarity of the line work and the historical significance of Dürer's contribution to the development of the woodcut as a medium for sophisticated narrative art.
