The Lagoon 1 is a plate from the 1947 publication Jazz, a collection of works by Henri Matisse. During his later years, Matisse turned to the technique of paper cut-outs, or decoupage, as his primary method of creation. This approach allowed him to manipulate colour and form directly, bypassing the traditional process of painting on canvas. By cutting shapes from sheets of paper painted with gouache, he achieved a synthesis of drawing and colour.
The composition features organic, seaweed-like forms arranged against a pale, neutral background. The shapes are defined by their fluid, rhythmic edges, which suggest movement and growth. Matisse employs a palette of high-contrast colours, including magenta, lime green, red, and black, to create a sense of visual energy. The arrangement is deliberately flat, rejecting the illusion of three-dimensional space in favour of a decorative, graphic quality.
