A seventeenth-century mezzotint by Alexander Browne depicting a child with a lamb in a pastoral setting, rendered with the soft tonal qualities of the era.
This mezzotint, titled The Lady Isabella, is a work by the British printmaker Alexander Browne. The composition depicts a young child, portrayed in the classical tradition as a putto or infant figure, seated in a natural setting. The child wears a floral wreath and rests a hand gently upon the head of a recumbent lamb, a motif often associated with innocence and pastoral themes in seventeenth-century art. The figure is draped in fabric that cascades around the base, adding a sense of volume and texture to the scene.
Behind the child, a dense arrangement of trees and foliage creates a sense of depth, leading the eye toward a distant, rolling horizon. The lighting is characteristic of the mezzotint process, which allows for soft transitions between shadow and light. This technique provides the image with a velvety quality, particularly in the rendering of the child's skin and the soft wool of the lamb. The background features a sky with light cloud cover, suggesting an outdoor environment that balances the foreground subject.
Alexander Browne was active in London during the late seventeenth century, where he worked as a printmaker and publisher. His output often involved reproducing paintings by contemporary artists, such as Sir Peter Lely, whose influence is visible in the dramatic drapery and the idealised treatment of the subject. The print captures the aesthetic preferences of the Restoration period, where classical allegories were frequently adapted for portraiture. The work remains a clear example of the technical capabilities of mezzotint engraving during this era, demonstrating the ability to achieve tonal depth without relying on traditional line-based hatching methods. The inclusion of the title at the base of the print follows the standard conventions for seventeenth-century commercial engravings, identifying the subject for the viewer while maintaining the formal presentation of the period.
