An early mezzotint by Prince Rupert of the Rhine, demonstrating the tonal depth and soft light transitions characteristic of this pioneering printmaking technique.
The Standard Bearer is a significant example of early mezzotint, a printmaking technique that Prince Rupert of the Rhine helped to develop and popularise during the seventeenth century. Unlike traditional engraving or etching, which rely on lines to create form, mezzotint works from dark to light. The artist roughens the entire surface of a copper plate with a tool known as a rocker, creating a burr that holds ink to produce a deep, velvety black. By scraping and burnishing areas of this burr, the artist reveals the lighter tones, allowing for subtle gradations and soft transitions between shadow and illumination.
In this composition, the figure is depicted in a three-quarter view, holding a staff. The dramatic contrast between the dark background and the illuminated face and sleeve demonstrates the technical potential of the medium. The subject wears a plumed hat and a doublet with slashed sleeves, typical of the period. The handling of the light across the fabric and the facial features creates a sense of volume and texture that was difficult to achieve with earlier print methods. The date 1658 is visible on the lower portion of the print, marking it as an early experiment in this tonal process.
Prince Rupert, a nephew of Charles I, was a polymath with a keen interest in scientific and artistic innovation. His contribution to the refinement of the mezzotint process allowed for a new level of atmospheric depth in printmaking. This work provides a clear view into the technical capabilities of the era, showing how the medium moved away from rigid line-based imagery toward a more painterly approach. The print remains a primary reference for the history of printmaking, documenting the transition toward tonal realism in European art.
