A late Baroque religious scene by Jan van Cleve (III), depicting the Holy Family with the infant Saint John the Baptist in a celestial setting.
This composition by the Flemish painter Jan van Cleve (III) displays the characteristic theatricality of the late Baroque period. The scene depicts the Holy Family, with the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph positioned in a devotional arrangement around the Christ Child. The inclusion of the infant Saint John the Baptist, who carries a cross, introduces a narrative element that foreshadows the Passion. Above the figures, a celestial realm opens, filled with putti and divine light, creating a vertical movement that draws the eye upward toward the heavens.
Van Cleve employs a dramatic use of chiaroscuro to model the figures, allowing them to emerge from the shadowed background. The palette is composed of muted earth tones, punctuated by the soft blues and warm ochres of the garments. The artist balances the earthly presence of the Holy Family with the ethereal nature of the angelic host, maintaining a sense of cohesion through fluid brushwork and soft transitions. The architectural elements at the base, including a carpenter's tool, serve as subtle reminders of Saint Joseph's earthly trade, grounding the spiritual subject in a tangible reality.
As a painter active in Ghent, Van Cleve was known for his religious commissions, which often adorned local churches and private chapels. This work reflects the stylistic preferences of the era, where emotional engagement and clear iconography were prioritised to guide the viewer through the theological narrative. The composition is carefully structured to lead the observer from the foreground details, such as the lilies and the basket, toward the central interaction between the figures. The overall effect is one of quiet contemplation, achieved through the measured gestures and the gentle expressions of the subjects.
