Benvenuto Tisi, known as Garofalo, was a central figure of the Ferrarese school during the Italian Renaissance. This work depicts the Holy Family alongside the infant Saint John the Baptist, a common subject that allowed artists to explore domestic intimacy within a sacred context. The composition is structured with the Virgin Mary seated centrally, holding the Christ Child, while Saint Joseph and the young Saint John the Baptist are positioned to the right. The figures are set against a backdrop of classical architectural ruins and a distant, atmospheric mountain range, which reflects the influence of Raphael and the Venetian school on Garofalo's practice.
