Beskrivning
A 1908 oil painting by Henri Rousseau, depicting four figures in striped uniforms playing football within a stylised, autumnal woodland setting.
Painted in 1908, The Football Players is a characteristic work by the French self-taught artist Henri Rousseau. The composition depicts four men engaged in a game of football within a dense, autumnal woodland setting. The figures are dressed in striped athletic uniforms, rendered with the flattened perspective and precise, almost rigid, attention to detail that defines Rousseau's unique approach to painting.
The trees flanking the players create a natural corridor, drawing the eye toward the centre of the action. Rousseau employs a distinct lack of traditional depth, placing the figures against a backdrop of foliage that appears more decorative than realistic. The players themselves possess a doll-like quality, their expressions and postures frozen in a moment of play. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to transform mundane subjects into dreamlike, surreal scenes through his unconventional handling of scale and space.
Rousseau, often referred to as Le Douanier due to his former occupation as a toll collector, remained largely outside the established art circles of his time. His work was frequently misunderstood by contemporary critics, yet it gained admiration from avant-garde painters who valued his directness and rejection of academic conventions. The Football Players captures this singular vision, where the ordinary activity of sport is reimagined through a lens of quiet, rhythmic repetition and stylised form. The palette is dominated by the warm, golden tones of the autumn leaves, which contrast with the blue and orange stripes of the players' kits. This print preserves the specific textures and flat colour application of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of Rousseau's meticulous technique.

The Football Players - Henri Rousseau
Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
