A classic Baroque depiction of the banishment of Adam and Eve, rendered with the balanced composition and anatomical precision characteristic of Domenichino.
Domenichino, a pupil of Annibale Carracci, produced this work during his mature period in Rome. The composition depicts the moment following the Fall of Man, where the Creator descends from the heavens to banish the first couple from the Garden of Eden. The artist employs a clear, classicising approach to the narrative, prioritising legible gestures and balanced anatomical forms over the dramatic chiaroscuro often associated with his contemporaries.
The Creator is shown aloft, supported by a group of putti and draped in a voluminous red mantle that contrasts with the cooler tones of the sky. Below, Adam and Eve react to the divine presence with expressions of sorrow and apprehension. Eve, positioned near the serpent, gestures towards the ground, while Adam stands in a posture of supplication. The inclusion of the lamb and the lion in the lower right corner serves as a traditional iconographic reference to the peace of the natural world before the corruption of sin, or perhaps a prefiguration of later theological themes.
Domenichino was known for his methodical preparation, often creating numerous sketches to refine the poses of his figures. This painting demonstrates his ability to integrate human emotion with a structured, orderly composition. The background features a soft, atmospheric rendering of the landscape, which provides a sense of depth without distracting from the primary figures. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the Bolognese school, which sought to combine the grace of Raphael with the observation of nature. It remains a representative example of early seventeenth-century Roman classicism, demonstrating the artist's technical precision and his adherence to the principles of clarity and decorum in religious art.
