This print reproduces a photographic record of the ceiling painting by Domenichino, located within the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome. Commissioned by Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini during the restoration of the church in 1617, the work occupies a central octagonal panel within a larger decorative scheme. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary ascending towards the heavens, her arms outstretched and her gaze directed upward. She is surrounded by a celestial arrangement of clouds and figures, rendered with the characteristic clarity and structured classicism associated with the artist's training under Annibale Carracci.
Domenichino, born Domenico Zampieri, was a central figure in the Roman Baroque period. His approach to religious subjects favoured a balance between emotional expression and formal order. In this specific work, the central figure of the Virgin is set against a sky that transitions from a deep blue to a lighter, luminous tone. The surrounding clouds are depicted with rounded forms, featuring distinct shadows that provide a sense of volume and weight to the scene. The surrounding ceiling architecture incorporates geometric motifs, including stars and heraldic elements, which frame the central narrative.
