A detailed 15th-century engraving by Master ES depicting Saint Luke with his symbolic winged ox, rendered with precise cross-hatching and early Renaissance technique.
This engraving by the anonymous German printmaker known as Master ES depicts Saint Luke, one of the four Evangelists. The artist, active in the Upper Rhine region during the mid-fifteenth century, is recognised for his technical precision and contribution to the development of early European printmaking. Master ES was among the first to utilise the burin with such control, allowing for a sophisticated range of tonal values through cross-hatching and varied line weights.
In this composition, Saint Luke is shown in a seated position, accompanied by his traditional attribute, the winged ox. The figure is draped in heavy, voluminous robes, rendered with careful attention to the fall of fabric and the weight of the material. The saint holds an open book, his gaze directed away from the page, suggesting a moment of divine inspiration or contemplation. The winged ox, positioned at his side, is depicted with a degree of naturalism that balances the symbolic nature of the subject. The halo surrounding the saint's head is executed with fine, radiating lines, a common convention in religious works of the period to denote sanctity.
The background remains relatively sparse, focusing the viewer's attention on the interaction between the saint and his symbolic companion. The ground beneath them is indicated by simple, rhythmic marks, providing a sense of space without distracting from the primary figures. This work reflects the transition in printmaking from simple outlines to more complex, modelled forms. It provides a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the period, where clarity of form and symbolic accuracy were paramount. The print demonstrates the technical mastery that allowed Master ES to influence subsequent generations of engravers, including Martin Schongauer. This museum-grade reproduction captures the fine detail of the original copperplate engraving, preserving the character of the early printing process.
