This engraving by the anonymous German printmaker known as Master E.S. depicts the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist positioned at the base of the cross. The work reflects the technical development of copperplate engraving in the mid-fifteenth century, a period when printmaking began to emerge as a distinct artistic medium in the Upper Rhine region.

The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions of the era. Christ is shown centrally, his body elongated and marked by the physical suffering associated with the event. To his left, the Virgin Mary stands in a posture of mourning, her heavy drapery rendered with precise, parallel hatching lines that define the volume of her garments. Master E.S. is identified by the monogram found on many of his works, though his identity remains unknown. His output was prolific, and he is credited with expanding the expressive potential of the burin. This print demonstrates his ability to balance linear clarity with emotional weight.
