Beskrivning
A serene rural scene by Henri Rousseau, featuring a dam, calm water, and simplified, graphic forms characteristic of his unique style.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter who spent much of his life working as a toll collector in Paris, produced this work during the early twentieth century. The painting depicts a quiet, rural scene featuring a dam structure spanning a river. The composition is defined by a clear, horizontal division between the foreground bank, the water, and the sky.
Typical of Rousseau's approach, the forms are simplified and rendered with a flat, graphic quality. The trees are painted as solid, dark silhouettes against the lighter sky, while the clouds are depicted as distinct, rounded shapes. A small French flag flies from a pole near the centre, providing a specific national context to the otherwise anonymous setting. The figures positioned along the bank are small and static, contributing to the sense of stillness that permeates the scene.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greens, ochres, and soft greys to establish the atmosphere of a calm day. Rousseau's technique avoids the traditional perspective and atmospheric blending favoured by his contemporaries, opting instead for a direct, almost childlike clarity. This stylistic choice creates a dreamlike quality, where the physical world is reconstructed through memory and imagination rather than direct observation. The architecture, including the small house on the right, is rendered with precise, clean lines, further emphasising the orderly nature of the composition. This work offers a glimpse into the unique visual language of an artist who remained largely outside the established art institutions of his time, yet whose work influenced many later modernists.

The Dam - Henri Rousseau
Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
