A 1939 oil painting by Henri Matisse, featuring a still life of daisies and a seated figure rendered in bold, flat planes of colour.
Painted in 1939, The Daisies is a characteristic example of Henri Matisse's later period, where he moved away from the extreme colour experimentation of his early career toward a more structured, decorative approach. The composition is divided into distinct zones, balancing a still life of flowers and fruit with figurative elements. A vase of daisies and a blue ceramic vessel sit upon a white pedestal, while a seated figure in a red dress occupies the foreground.
Matisse employs a flattened perspective, typical of his mature style, where the background and foreground merge into a series of bold, graphic shapes. The colour palette is deliberate and high-contrast, using primary tones to define the forms. The black background acts as a void, pushing the white pedestal and the bright red of the figure's dress forward. The inclusion of a framed sketch of a nude figure in the upper left corner adds a layer of self-reference, a common device in Matisse's studio interiors.
This work demonstrates the artist's focus on the relationship between objects and their environment. Rather than attempting to replicate the physical world, Matisse constructs a visual space through simplified lines and flat planes of colour. The daisies are rendered with quick, rhythmic brushstrokes, contrasting with the solid, unmodulated red of the seated woman's clothing. The painting reflects his interest in the decorative potential of the canvas, where every element serves the overall balance of the composition. By 1939, Matisse had refined his technique to a point of extreme economy, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the essential harmony of form and hue.
