A devotional triptych by Lorenzo di Niccolò featuring the Crucifixion flanked by Saint Nicholas and Saint Anthony Abbot, rendered in tempera and gold leaf.
This triptych by Lorenzo di Niccolò represents the stylistic conventions of the Florentine school during the early fifteenth century. The central panel depicts the Crucifixion, featuring the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist flanking the cross, with Mary Magdalene kneeling at the base. The side panels contain individual figures of Saint Nicholas of Myra on the left and Saint Anthony Abbot on the right. Each figure is set against a tooled gold ground, a technique common in the period to suggest a celestial space beyond the physical world.
Lorenzo di Niccolò was active in Florence and worked within the tradition established by earlier masters such as Agnolo Gaddi. His approach to figure construction relies on linear clarity and the rhythmic arrangement of drapery. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and graceful, swaying postures typical of the International Gothic style. The use of tempera allows for precise detail in the facial features and the decorative patterns of the vestments, while the gold leaf provides a reflective surface that interacts with ambient light.
This work functions as a devotional object, intended for private prayer or a small chapel. The triptych format allows for the physical opening and closing of the side panels, which protects the central image while providing a portable altar. The preservation of the original frame structure, though later modified, maintains the intended architectural presentation of the panels. The colour palette is dominated by the warm tones of the gold leaf, contrasted with the deep reds of the garments and the muted earth tones of the saints' robes. This piece offers a view into the devotional practices and aesthetic priorities of the Italian Renaissance transition period.
