A fourteenth-century illuminated manuscript leaf by Lippo Vanni, featuring a historiated initial 'A' depicting the Ascension of Christ.
This exquisite leaf originates from a fourteenth-century missal, a liturgical book containing the texts for the celebration of the Mass. Attributed to the Sienese painter and illuminator Lippo Vanni, the work features a large, historiated initial 'A' that frames the Ascension of Christ. Within the letter, the Virgin Mary and the Apostles gaze upward toward the figure of Christ, who is depicted in a mandorla above them. The composition utilises the characteristic Sienese palette of the period, combining soft flesh tones with deep blues and touches of gold leaf to denote the divine realm.
The surrounding text is written in a formal Gothic script, accompanied by square musical notation on red staves. This arrangement demonstrates the integration of visual art and liturgical music, common in high-quality manuscripts produced for monastic or cathedral use. The foliage extending from the initial displays the fluid, organic forms typical of Vanni's decorative style, which often bridged the gap between panel painting and book illumination. The parchment surface retains its natural texture, providing a warm, neutral ground that allows the pigments to remain clear and legible despite the passage of centuries.
Lippo Vanni was active in Siena during the mid-fourteenth century, a period when the city was a centre for artistic production. His work is noted for its narrative clarity and the expressive quality of his figures. This fragment offers a glimpse into the devotional practices of the era, where the act of reading and singing the liturgy was supported by such visual aids. The precision of the brushwork within the small scale of the initial indicates the high level of skill required for manuscript illumination, a discipline that demanded both steady hands and a deep understanding of theological iconography.
