A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting the courtesan Takigawa and her attendants in elegant, patterned kimonos.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga belongs to the series 'Models for Fashion: New Designs as Fresh as Young Leaves' (Hinagata wakana no hatsu moyo), published around 1784. The composition features the high-ranking courtesan Takigawa of the Ogiya house, accompanied by her two young attendants, Onami and Menami. Kiyonaga was a master of the bijin-ga genre, which focused on the depiction of beautiful women. He is particularly noted for his tall, graceful figures, a departure from the more diminutive proportions favoured by his predecessors.
The figures are arranged in a balanced, rhythmic formation against a neutral background. This technique allows the viewer to focus on the elaborate textile patterns of their kimonos. The central figure of Takigawa is adorned with a striking peacock motif, a symbol of luxury and status within the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The attendants wear simpler, yet equally refined garments, creating a visual hierarchy that reflects their roles. The print demonstrates Kiyonaga's skill in line work and his ability to convey movement through the gentle folds of the fabric and the subtle positioning of the subjects.
Kiyonaga's work during this period captured the fashion trends of Edo-period Japan. The series functioned as a catalogue of contemporary styles, documenting the specific kimono patterns and hairstyles popular among the elite courtesans of the time. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft tones that complement the delicate linework. This print provides a window into the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth century, where the elegance of the human form was inextricably linked to the artistry of textile design. The print remains a primary example of the mature style of the Torii school, which dominated the ukiyo-e scene for much of the eighteenth century.
