A haunting depiction of carnival participants by Spanish Expressionist José Gutiérrez Solana, capturing the grim aesthetic of 'España Negra'.
José Gutiérrez Solana is known for his preoccupation with the darker, more grotesque aspects of Spanish life. In this work, he depicts a group of carnival participants whose appearance leans towards the macabre. The figures are rendered with heavy outlines and a sombre palette, reflecting the artist's interest in the 'España Negra' or Black Spain aesthetic. This movement sought to capture the harsh realities and archaic traditions of the country, often focusing on themes of death, poverty, and ritual.
The composition presents a line of characters, each wearing masks or costumes that distort their human features. The central figures carry props such as a broom and a bell, suggesting a chaotic or ritualistic performance. The faces are painted with hollow eyes and gaunt expressions, which create a sense of unease. Solana uses a flattened perspective, pushing the figures to the foreground to confront the viewer directly. His technique involves thick, deliberate brushwork that emphasises the rough texture of the costumes and the weathered skin of the participants.
Solana's work often draws from his observations of street life and popular festivities in Madrid. Unlike the celebratory nature typically associated with carnivals, this piece focuses on the unsettling and the uncanny. The muted colours, dominated by browns, ochres, and blacks, reinforce the grim atmosphere. This print captures the artist's ability to transform mundane social gatherings into haunting visual narratives. It is a representative example of his contribution to twentieth-century Spanish art, where the boundaries between reality and the grotesque are blurred through a stark, uncompromising lens.
