Beskrivning
A 1912 Expressionist oil painting by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, featuring two figures rendered in simplified, angular forms and bold, contrasting colours.
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff was a founding member of Die Brücke, a group of German Expressionist artists who sought to break away from traditional academic painting. This work, dating from 1912, displays the characteristic stylistic choices of the movement during its most active period. The figures are rendered with simplified, angular forms that prioritise emotional expression over anatomical accuracy. Schmidt-Rottluff employs a bold, non-naturalistic colour palette, using stark contrasts between the deep green of the seating area and the warm, ochre tones of the skin.
The composition is flattened, removing traditional depth to bring the subjects to the front of the picture plane. The brushwork is direct and unrefined, reflecting the artist's desire for an immediate, raw aesthetic. By reducing the human form to essential shapes, the artist directs the viewer's attention to the interplay of colour and the psychological weight of the figures. The dark, heavy outlines serve to contain the colour fields, a technique common in the woodcut prints that were also central to the output of Die Brücke members.
This piece captures the tension between the domestic setting and the distorted, subjective reality favoured by the Expressionists. The figures appear detached from their surroundings, existing within a space defined by colour rather than perspective. Schmidt-Rottluff's approach to the human figure here is typical of his work during the years leading up to the First World War, where the focus remained on the expressive potential of form and hue. The work remains a clear example of the shift toward abstraction that defined early twentieth-century German art.
