This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsen depicts the kabuki actor Yamashita Mangiku I in the role of Lady Yuya (Yuya Gozen). The performance took place at the Nakamura Theater in the seventh month of 1789. Shunsen, a student of the Katsukawa school, focuses here on the stylised elegance of the actor, capturing the specific posture and costume associated with this historical character.
The composition follows the conventions of yakusha-e, or actor prints, which were popular in Edo-period Japan. The figure stands against a neutral background, allowing the viewer to focus on the details of the kimono. The garment features a pattern of bamboo stalks and leaves, rendered with precise lines. The actor's pose is deliberate, reflecting the controlled movements of the kabuki stage. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochre tones, black, and muted pinks to define the form and texture of the fabric.
Katsukawa Shunsen was active during a period when the depiction of kabuki actors reached a high level of technical refinement. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance the representation of the individual actor with the requirements of the theatrical role. The fine lines of the hair and the subtle shading of the face show the skill of the carver and printer involved in the production of the work. As a piece of historical documentation, it provides insight into the fashion and performance styles of the late eighteenth century. The print is a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the Katsukawa school, which favoured realistic facial features over the more exaggerated styles seen in other schools of the time.
