A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunzan, capturing the dramatic presence of kabuki actor Nakamura Nakazo I in a striking red costume.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunzan depicts the celebrated kabuki actor Nakamura Nakazo I. The artist, a member of the Katsukawa school, focused his output on the theatrical world of Edo-period Japan. Yakusha-e, or actor prints, functioned as promotional material and souvenirs for theatre-goers, capturing the specific mannerisms and costumes of performers in their most famous roles.
In this composition, the actor is portrayed with the exaggerated facial features characteristic of the Katsukawa style, which sought to capture the individual likeness of the performer rather than an idealised mask. The figure is draped in a heavy, deep-red garment adorned with a prominent white crest. The stark contrast between the bold red fabric and the neutral background draws the eye to the actor's intense expression and posture. The inclusion of a sword hilt protruding from the side suggests the dramatic tension inherent in the character being portrayed.
Katsukawa Shunzan was active during the late 18th century, a period when the production of ukiyo-e prints reached a high level of technical sophistication. The print demonstrates the precise line work and flat colour application typical of the medium. The composition is balanced, using the large expanse of the actor's robe to anchor the figure within the frame. The subtle wood-grain texture visible in the background suggests the quality of the original paper and the printing process. This work provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the kabuki theatre, where the boundary between the performer and the character was frequently blurred for the audience. The print remains a record of the aesthetic conventions that defined the theatrical portraiture of the era.
