This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final years of his career. The composition captures the bustling atmosphere of the Ryōgoku Bridge, a site of significant commercial and social activity in nineteenth-century Edo. Hiroshige employs a high vantage point, allowing the viewer to observe the bridge as it spans the Sumida River, while simultaneously detailing the lively riverbank below.
The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of the bokashi technique, a method of colour gradation used here to transition the sky from a deep indigo at the top to a pale, atmospheric glow near the horizon.
