A 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku featuring the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshiro IV in the role of Otoma.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshiro IV in the role of Otoma. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief, ten-month period during which Sharaku was active. His career remains one of the most enigmatic chapters in the history of Japanese art, as his identity and sudden disappearance from the publishing scene are still subjects of academic debate.
Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised portraits common in the ukiyo-e genre. Instead of smoothing over the features of his subjects, he employed a style of caricature that emphasised the specific, often exaggerated expressions of the actors he portrayed. In this print, the figure is shown with a distinct, introspective posture. The actor is wrapped in a dark hood and a green kimono, standing against a backdrop of bundled straw. The composition relies on the contrast between the muted, earthy tones of the clothing and the stark, pale face of the actor.
Technically, the print demonstrates the refined capabilities of the Edo-period woodblock process. The lines are precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the subtle contours of the face. The use of colour is restrained, focusing on the olive green of the kimono and the dark tones of the head covering, which draws the viewer's attention to the actor's gaze. This print is a representative example of the yakusha-e (actor print) tradition, which served as a form of celebrity portraiture for the theatre-going public of the time. By capturing the actor in a moment of dramatic stillness, Sharaku provides a glimpse into the aesthetic priorities of the late eighteenth-century Japanese stage.
