A minimalist ink painting of the deity Tenjin by the celebrated Japanese calligrapher and artist Konoe Nobutada.
This hanging scroll depicts the deity Tenjin, the deified spirit of the scholar Sugawara no Michizane, in a minimalist ink style. Konoe Nobutada, a prominent court noble and one of the Sanpitsu (Three Brushes) of the Kanei era, employs a reductive aesthetic here. The figure is rendered with a few confident, sweeping strokes of black ink, capturing the essence of the subject without unnecessary detail. The robes are suggested by fluid, continuous lines, while the facial features are drawn with precision, conveying a sense of scholarly gravity.
Tenjin is often associated with learning and literature in Japanese tradition. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the scroll complements the visual representation, as Nobutada was celebrated for his mastery of both painting and brushwork. The composition relies on the interplay between the negative space of the paper and the bold, dark ink. This approach is characteristic of the Zenga style, which prioritises spontaneity and the direct expression of the artist's internal state over technical realism.
Nobutada was a central figure in the cultural life of the late Momoyama period. His work reflects the refined tastes of the aristocracy, yet this particular piece demonstrates a departure from more elaborate courtly styles toward a more direct, expressive mode of ink painting. The scroll remains a fine example of how Japanese literati artists utilised simple forms to convey complex themes. The paper shows a natural ageing process, which adds to the quiet, meditative quality of the work.
