A fine art print depicting scenes from the Tale of Genji, rendered in the traditional Tosa school style with gold leaf and mineral pigments.
This work belongs to the Tosa school, a lineage of painters associated with the Japanese imperial court. The Tosa style is defined by its adherence to Yamato-e traditions, which prioritise Japanese subject matter over the Chinese-influenced styles popular in other circles. This particular piece depicts episodes from the Tale of Genji, an 11th-century literary classic attributed to Murasaki Shikibu. The narrative unfolds through a series of vignettes, a common format for handscrolls or folding screens of this period.
The visual language employs the fukinuki-yatai technique, or blown-off roof, which allows the viewer to observe the interior activities of the court from an elevated perspective. Figures are rendered with stylised features, including the hikime-kagibana method of depicting eyes as thin slits and noses as simple hooks. This approach emphasises the social status and emotional restraint of the aristocratic characters rather than individual likeness.
Gold leaf is applied extensively across the composition, creating a luminous background that suggests the opulence of the Heian-period court. The use of gold clouds, or suihaku, serves to separate distinct narrative moments while maintaining a unified decorative surface. The palette consists of mineral pigments, including malachite green and cinnabar, which have retained their clarity over the centuries. The architecture is delineated with precise, thin lines, contrasting with the softer, organic forms of the surrounding gardens and pine trees. This combination of rigid structural elements and fluid natural motifs is characteristic of the Tosa school's approach to narrative illustration, balancing the demands of storytelling with the requirements of decorative screen painting.
