A powerful example of 19th-century Russian social realism, depicting a stark contrast between a comfortable clergyman and impoverished peasants.
Vasily Perov painted this work in 1862, capturing a scene of social disparity in the Russian countryside. The composition centres on a well-fed clergyman seated at a table, enjoying tea from a samovar. His comfortable posture contrasts with the figures standing before him. A ragged, elderly man, likely a veteran, and a young child approach the table, their tattered clothing and humble demeanour indicating their impoverished state. The clergyman remains largely indifferent to their presence, creating a narrative of social inequality.
Perov was a founding member of the Peredvizhniki, or Wanderers, a group of Russian artists who sought to bring art to the public and address contemporary social issues. This painting is a clear example of their approach to realism, which favoured honest depictions of life over the idealised subjects common in academic art of the period. The setting, Mytishchi, was a popular destination near Moscow, yet Perov uses this familiar location to expose the tensions between the clergy and the peasantry.
The artist employs a muted palette of earth tones, which directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the figures. The light filters through the trees, casting soft shadows that define the space while maintaining a focus on the central table. The detail in the clothing, from the clergyman's dark robes to the worn textures of the veteran's coat, provides a sense of authenticity to the scene. By documenting these everyday encounters, Perov provides a window into the social conditions of 19th-century Russia. The work remains a significant example of how art can document the realities of its time without resorting to overt sentimentality.
