A poignant Post-Impressionist work by Vincent van Gogh, depicting prisoners walking in a confined yard, based on an engraving by Gustave Doré.
Painted in February 1890 while Van Gogh was a patient at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this work depicts a group of convicts walking in a circle within a confined prison yard. The artist based the composition on a wood engraving by Gustave Doré, which illustrated a scene from Newgate Prison in London. Van Gogh adapted the subject, replacing the stark black-and-white tones of the original print with his own palette of blues, greens, and ochres.
The composition is dominated by the towering, oppressive brick walls that enclose the yard. These walls create a sense of claustrophobia, as they occupy the majority of the frame and dwarf the figures below. The prisoners move in a repetitive, rhythmic loop, their heads bowed and bodies hunched. Van Gogh employs thick, visible brushstrokes to define the texture of the masonry and the worn clothing of the men. The light source appears to come from above, casting long, angular shadows across the ground and creating a contrast between the sunlit upper walls and the darker, shadowed lower sections.
One figure in the centre of the circle looks directly towards the viewer, his face pale and distinct from the others. This inclusion is often interpreted as a self-portrait, suggesting the artist identified with the isolation and confinement experienced by the prisoners. The work reflects the artist's interest in themes of human suffering and the psychological weight of institutional life. By reinterpreting an existing image, Van Gogh transformed a scene of social observation into a personal meditation on his own circumstances. The painting remains a notable example of his ability to imbue a borrowed subject with emotional intensity through colour and expressive mark-making.
