This woodblock print is a plate from the series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection that established the landscape genre within the Ukiyo-e tradition. Katsushika Hokusai depicts the coastal area of Tagonoura near Ejiri, a station on the Tōkaidō road. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the foreground, occupied by boats navigating the choppy waters, and the background, dominated by the silhouette of Mount Fuji.

The artist employs a clear, graphic approach to form. The water is rendered through repetitive, stylised patterns that suggest movement without attempting photographic realism. The boats, with their high prows, provide a sense of scale against the massive, snow-capped mountain. Hokusai uses a limited palette, relying on the contrast between the deep Prussian blue of the sky and the mountain peak, the pale yellow of the coastal plains, and the green tones of the foliage and figures. This use of Prussian blue, a synthetic pigment imported from Europe, was a technical innovation that allowed for the deep, saturated skies characteristic of this series.

The figures in the boats are small, emphasising the vastness of the natural environment.
