A 1486 woodcut by Erhard Reuwich depicting Syrian Christians, originally published in the travelogue 'Peregrinatio in terram sanctam'.
This woodcut originates from the 'Peregrinatio in terram sanctam', a travelogue authored by Bernhard von Breydenbach and illustrated by the Dutch artist Erhard Reuwich. Published in Mainz in 1486, the work documents a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Reuwich accompanied the expedition, providing sketches that were subsequently translated into woodblock prints. This specific image depicts the 'Surianen', or Syrian Christians, as observed by the travellers during their journey.
The composition presents four figures arranged in a shallow, outdoor setting. Three individuals are seated around a low vessel, while a fourth stands to the left, carrying a basket. The figures wear turbans and layered garments, reflecting the artist's attempt to document the diverse populations encountered in the Levant. The lines are bold and functional, characteristic of late fifteenth-century woodcut techniques designed for mass reproduction within printed books. A small, stylised tree appears on the right, providing a minimal sense of environment. Above the figures, the text is set in a blackletter typeface, identifying the subjects in the vernacular of the time.
Reuwich is recognised for his role in bridging the gap between medieval manuscript illustration and the emerging medium of printed book illustration. His work for the 'Peregrinatio' is noted for its attempt at ethnographic observation, moving beyond purely symbolic representations of foreign cultures. The print provides a window into the European perception of the Near East during the late medieval period. It remains a significant example of early travel literature and the technical capabilities of the printing press in the 1480s. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, capturing the stark contrast of the original ink-on-paper medium.
