A 1922 lithograph by Wassily Kandinsky, Small Worlds VI features a dynamic arrangement of geometric and organic forms in high-contrast black and white.
Small Worlds VI is a lithograph from the 1922 portfolio titled Small Worlds, produced during Wassily Kandinsky's tenure at the Bauhaus in Weimar. This collection represents a period where the artist explored the technical possibilities of printmaking, specifically lithography, woodcut, and drypoint, to articulate his theories on form and space.
The composition is defined by a stark contrast between black and white, utilising the inherent graphic quality of the medium to separate geometric and organic elements. A diagonal axis cuts through the frame, creating a dynamic tension between the various shapes. Within the work, one observes a central circular form, textured with a grid-like pattern, which acts as a gravitational anchor for the surrounding motifs. These include sharp triangular wedges, linear structures, and free-flowing, calligraphic lines that suggest movement across the two-dimensional plane.
Kandinsky employs a variety of textures, from solid black masses to stippled areas and fine cross-hatching, to create depth without relying on traditional perspective. The arrangement of these elements reflects his interest in the spiritual and psychological impact of non-representational art. By stripping away the need for recognisable subject matter, the artist invites the viewer to engage directly with the rhythm and balance of the visual components. This print demonstrates the precision and analytical approach Kandinsky brought to his work, balancing spontaneous mark-making with a rigorous structural framework. It remains a clear example of his mid-career output, where his earlier, more fluid style began to incorporate the geometric discipline associated with his Bauhaus teaching years.
