A refined lithograph by Albert Belleroche, capturing a woman in a flowing gown during a moment of transition at the theatre.
Albert Belleroche was a British artist who spent much of his career in France, where he became a master of the lithographic medium. This work, Leaving the Theater, captures a fleeting moment of social transition. The subject is a woman depicted in a long, flowing gown, her posture suggesting a pause before she exits into the night. Belleroche uses the lithographic stone to create a soft, atmospheric effect, allowing the texture of the crayon to define the folds of the fabric and the subtle light falling across her form.
The composition relies on a vertical orientation, which emphasises the elegance of the figure. The background is kept minimal, with vertical striations that suggest the architectural interior of a theatre foyer or a doorway. By limiting his palette to a single, warm sepia tone, Belleroche focuses the viewer on the interplay between light and shadow. The figure emerges from the darkness, her face illuminated by a soft glow, while the rest of her silhouette dissolves into the textured ground of the print.
Belleroche was a close associate of John Singer Sargent, and his work shares a similar interest in the fluid, painterly quality of portraiture. Unlike the rigid academic styles of the period, his prints possess a spontaneous, sketch-like quality. He often printed his own lithographs, which allowed him to experiment with the pressure and ink density to achieve specific tonal variations. This print is a fine example of his ability to convey mood and character through economy of line and tone. It captures the essence of the Belle Époque, a period defined by its interest in leisure, fashion, and the theatre as a central component of urban life. The work remains a quiet, observational study of a woman in a moment of private reflection.
