Separation in the Evening (1922) is a characteristic example of Paul Klee's exploration of colour theory and geometric abstraction. The composition is structured through a series of horizontal bands that transition from deep violet and indigo at the top to warm ochre and orange at the base. This gradient suggests the fading light of dusk, a common theme in Klee's work during his tenure at the Bauhaus.
Two opposing arrows occupy the centre of the frame. A downward-pointing arrow in a muted, dark tone descends from the upper register, while an upward-pointing arrow in a luminous yellow rises from the lower section. The two shapes do not touch, creating a visual tension that gives the work its title. Klee often used such symbols to represent movement, direction, and the interplay between celestial and terrestrial forces.
The application of paint reveals the texture of the paper, with the watercolour washes creating soft, atmospheric transitions between the bands.
