A refined drypoint and etching from the 1922 Small Worlds portfolio, showcasing Kandinsky's mastery of abstract line and geometric composition.
Small Worlds XI is a drypoint and etching from the portfolio Kleine Welten (Small Worlds), published in 1922 by the Propyläen Verlag in Berlin. This collection consists of twelve prints, each exploring the potential of graphic media to convey abstract concepts through line, point, and plane. In this specific composition, Kandinsky employs a sparse arrangement of geometric and organic forms that float across the white space of the paper.
The print demonstrates the artist's theoretical approach to visual language, where individual elements function as autonomous units. Thin, precise lines intersect with hatched shapes, stippled circles, and angular structures. There is no central perspective or horizon line, which forces the viewer to engage with the image as a flat, non-representational field. The interplay between the solid black ink and the negative space creates a sense of tension and balance.
Kandinsky produced these prints during his tenure at the Bauhaus in Weimar. This period was marked by his systematic investigation into the psychological effects of form and colour. While the Small Worlds portfolio includes works in lithography and woodcut, the drypoint and etching techniques allowed for a finer, more delicate line quality. The resulting image possesses a technical clarity that reflects the rigorous intellectual environment of the Bauhaus. The work avoids narrative or figurative representation, focusing instead on the rhythmic distribution of marks. It is a study in spatial relationships, where the placement of a single dot or a series of parallel lines alters the equilibrium of the entire composition. This print offers a clear view into the artist's methodology, showing how he reduced complex ideas to their most basic visual components.
