A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Eishōsai Chōki depicting a dramatic scene from the Chushingura theatre production.
This woodblock print by Eishōsai Chōki depicts a dramatic moment from the third act of the Chushingura, the famous tale of the forty-seven ronin. The composition focuses on three figures: Okaru, Kanbei, and Bannai. Chōki, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, employs a refined aesthetic that balances narrative tension with the stylistic conventions of the period. The figures are arranged in a dynamic, theatrical pose, characteristic of yakusha-e, or actor prints, which were popular in Edo-period Japan.
The print displays the technical precision of the woodblock medium. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the contours of the robes and the expressive features of the actors. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that allow the viewer to focus on the interaction between the characters. The architectural elements in the background, represented by simple geometric lines, provide a sense of space without distracting from the central action. The figures are rendered with a focus on their emotional state, captured through their postures and facial expressions.
Eishōsai Chōki was active during the late eighteenth century and is known for his contributions to the development of the Ukiyo-e genre. His work often features elongated figures and a sophisticated use of colour, which set his prints apart from those of his contemporaries. This specific scene captures the essence of kabuki theatre, where the narrative is conveyed through gesture and costume. The print serves as a record of the performance styles of the time, reflecting the cultural interests of the urban population in Edo. By focusing on a specific moment of conflict, the artist invites the viewer to engage with the narrative depth of the Chushingura legend.
