Beskrivning
A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, featuring the iconic Moon Pine framing a view of Ueno.
This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. The work depicts the Moon Pine, a famous tree located at the Kiyomizu Kannon-do temple in the Ueno district of Edo, modern-day Tokyo. Hiroshige employs a bold compositional technique, using the curved trunk of the pine to frame the view of the Shinobazu Pond and the Bentendo temple below.
The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of perspective and framing. By placing the pine in the immediate foreground, Hiroshige creates a visual aperture that draws the eye toward the distant buildings and the water. The circular shape of the branch, which gives the tree its name, acts as a natural lens. The colour palette transitions from the deep indigo of the night sky at the top to the lighter, hazy tones of the horizon, suggesting the quiet atmosphere of a moonlit evening.
Technically, the print relies on the precise registration of multiple woodblocks to achieve the subtle gradients in the sky and the detailed textures of the pine needles. The red cartouches, containing the series title and the specific location, provide a structural balance to the organic curves of the tree. This work is a characteristic example of Hiroshige's later period, where he experimented with extreme foreground elements to alter the viewer's perception of space. The print captures a specific moment in the urban geography of nineteenth-century Japan, documenting both the natural features and the architectural environment of the Ueno area before the rapid modernisation of the Meiji era.
