A nineteenth-century engraving of Saint Geneviève, produced for the Düsseldorf society for the dissemination of religious imagery.
This engraving depicts Saint Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris, rendered in the precise, linear style characteristic of the Düsseldorf school of the mid-nineteenth century. The composition, based on an invention by Joseph Settegast, presents the saint in a calm, contemplative posture. She holds a shepherd's staff, referencing her early life, while two sheep rest at her feet. In the background, a simplified architectural silhouette suggests the city of Paris, providing a sense of place to the hagiographic scene.
The print bears the inscription of the 'Verein zur Verbreitung religiöser Bilder in Düsseldorf', an organisation dedicated to the dissemination of devotional imagery. This association with the Düsseldorf society places the work within a broader context of nineteenth-century religious art production, which favoured clear, didactic narratives and balanced compositions. The technique employed is typical of the period, utilising fine hatching to model the folds of the saint's robes and the texture of the animals' wool. The overall effect is one of restraint and clarity, qualities highly valued by the Nazarene artists and their contemporaries who sought to revive a sense of purity in Christian art.
As a historical document, the print captures the intersection of religious devotion and mass-market print culture in Europe. The inclusion of the publisher's details at the base, noting depots in both Düsseldorf and Paris, indicates the reach of such devotional works during this era. The image remains a clear example of the technical proficiency found in mid-century German printmaking, where the engraver's primary goal was the faithful reproduction of a devotional design for a wide audience. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, preserving the original tonal qualities and the precise line work of Nüsser's engraving.
