A detailed nineteenth-century engraving of Saint Anthony the Hermit, produced for the Düsseldorf religious art society.
This engraving depicts Saint Anthony the Great, often referred to as Anthony the Hermit, standing in a rugged, desolate environment. The figure is rendered with precise, controlled lines characteristic of nineteenth-century German printmaking. He wears the traditional habit of a monk, clutching a book in one hand and a staff topped with a cross and bell in the other. A small pig, a common attribute associated with the saint in Western iconography, is positioned near his feet. The background features a rocky outcrop and sparse vegetation, which provides a sense of isolation appropriate for the subject.
The work is marked with the inscription 'C. Clafen inv', indicating that the original composition was conceived by the artist C. Clafen, while the engraving itself was executed by E. Rittinghaus. The lower margin contains the title 'S. Antonius Erem' and a note stating that the print is the property of the 'Verein zur Verbreitung religiöser Bilder in Düsseldorf'. This organisation was active in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, producing devotional imagery for a wide audience. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the Düsseldorf School, which favoured clear narrative, technical proficiency, and a formal approach to religious subjects. The composition is balanced, with the saint occupying the centre, while the surrounding elements are kept relatively simple to maintain focus on the figure. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates subtle gradations of tone, giving the robes and the rocky terrain a sense of volume and texture. This piece is a representative example of the mass-produced religious prints that circulated throughout Europe during this period, intended to provide accessible, high-quality devotional art for the home or parish.
