A geometric wood construction by Kurt Schwitters, featuring a balanced arrangement of primary colours and spatial forms.
Kurt Schwitters, a central figure in the Dada movement, developed his Merz practice to incorporate found objects and geometric forms into three-dimensional constructions. Relief in Relief exemplifies his shift towards a more structured, geometric language during the mid-1920s. This work moves away from the chaotic assemblage of his earlier collages, favouring a deliberate arrangement of painted wooden elements.
The composition relies on a balance of primary colours and stark geometric shapes. A teal-coloured frame encloses a yellow background, which serves as a stage for the protruding forms. A horizontal red bar sits at the top, while a curved red segment occupies the right side, creating a sense of tension against the black void on the left. The inclusion of a small, pale pink circle adds a subtle tonal variation to the otherwise bold palette. The construction is not merely a flat image but a physical object that interacts with light and shadow, casting its own depth onto the wall.
Schwitters utilised these constructions to explore the relationship between space, form, and colour. By stripping away representational imagery, he focused on the material qualities of the wood and the spatial dynamics created by the overlapping planes. This approach reflects his engagement with the broader European avant-garde, particularly the influence of De Stijl and Russian Constructivism. The work demonstrates his ability to transform mundane materials into a precise, calculated arrangement. It remains a clear example of his transition from the anarchic spirit of Dada to a more formalised, architectural aesthetic that defined his later career in exile.
