A six-panel ink wash screen by Uragami Shunkin, depicting weathered rock formations and flowing water in the traditional Bunjinga style.
Uragami Shunkin, the son of the celebrated literati painter Uragami Gyokudo, produced this six-panel folding screen using the traditional ink wash techniques of the Bunjinga school. The composition focuses on the interplay between jagged, weathered rock formations and the fluid motion of water. Shunkin employs a restrained palette of monochrome ink, using varying degrees of dilution to suggest depth and texture within the stone surfaces.
The brushwork is characteristic of the literati tradition, where the artist prioritises expressive, calligraphic strokes over strict representational accuracy. The rocks are rendered with dry, stippled ink, while the water is suggested through long, sweeping lines that guide the viewer across the horizontal expanse of the screen. Small clusters of vegetation are interspersed among the boulders, providing a sense of scale and natural life.
This work reflects the intellectual climate of the Edo period, during which artists drew inspiration from Chinese landscape traditions while adapting them to Japanese sensibilities. The screen format allows for a panoramic view, encouraging the viewer to engage with the scene as a continuous narrative of natural elements. The negative space, or ma, is utilised effectively to balance the density of the rock formations, creating a sense of calm despite the implied movement of the water. Shunkin's control of ink tone demonstrates his technical proficiency and his adherence to the aesthetic values of the scholar-painter, which favoured spontaneity and personal expression. The work remains a clear example of the Bunjinga style, where the artist's internal state is projected onto the natural world through the medium of ink and paper.
