A refined 1853 charcoal and chalk portrait of the Dutch poet Petrus Augustus de Génestet by Antonie Johannes Groeneveldt.
This portrait depicts the Dutch poet and theologian Petrus Augustus de Génestet, captured in a moment of quiet contemplation. Executed by Antonie Johannes Groeneveldt in 1853, the work utilises charcoal and white chalk on a toned paper ground, a technique that allows for subtle gradations of light and shadow across the subject's features. The sitter is shown seated, holding an open book on his lap, which aligns with his identity as a man of letters and a clergyman.
Groeneveldt focuses on the sitter's expression, rendering the eyes and facial structure with precision. The use of white chalk highlights the bridge of the nose, the forehead, and the collar, providing a sense of volume against the darker charcoal strokes used for the coat and hair. The composition is restrained, placing the subject against a neutral background to ensure the viewer's attention remains on the individual. The artist's signature and the date are visible in the lower left corner, confirming the provenance of this mid-nineteenth-century study.
This drawing reflects the conventions of Dutch portraiture during the mid-1800s, where artists sought to balance technical accuracy with a sense of the sitter's character. The choice of medium suggests a preparatory or informal nature, common for portraits of intellectuals and public figures of the period. The muted palette and the soft application of the chalk create a sense of intimacy, typical of works intended for private collections or personal archives. By capturing de Génestet in a relaxed posture, Groeneveldt provides a humanising view of a figure known primarily for his literary contributions to Dutch culture.
