A detailed nineteenth-century lithographic portrait of Justinus, Count of Nassau, by Dutch artist Antonie Johannes Groeneveldt.
This lithographic portrait by Antonie Johannes Groeneveldt depicts Justinus van Nassau, the illegitimate son of William the Silent. The print captures the subject in a bust-length format, rendered with the precise technical control characteristic of nineteenth-century Dutch printmaking. Groeneveldt employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the subject's clothing, particularly the elaborate lace collar and the structured fabric of his doublet. The shading around the figure provides a subtle sense of volume, allowing the portrait to emerge from the stark white background of the paper.
Justinus van Nassau is presented with a calm, steady gaze, reflecting the formal traditions of historical portraiture. The artist focuses on the facial features, using fine lines to suggest the contours of the face and the texture of the hair. Below the image, the print includes a facsimile of the subject's signature and a small heraldic crest, elements that align with the conventions of commemorative historical prints produced during this period. The work functions as a record of Dutch nobility, maintaining a clear, objective approach to the representation of its subject.
Groeneveldt was active during a time when lithography became a primary medium for the dissemination of historical and biographical imagery. This print demonstrates the capacity of the medium to replicate the nuances of earlier portrait styles while maintaining the clarity required for archival or educational purposes. The composition remains balanced, with the figure positioned centrally to draw the viewer's attention to the likeness. The absence of extraneous background detail ensures that the focus remains entirely on the individual, providing a clean, academic presentation suitable for a variety of interior settings.
