A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Jan Brouwer featuring a portrait of Louise Henriëtte, Electress of Brandenburg.
This engraving by Jan Brouwer depicts Louise Henriëtte of Nassau, the eldest daughter of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, and Amalia of Solms-Braunfels. As the Electress of Brandenburg, she held a position of significant political influence during the seventeenth century. The print captures her in a formal, bust-length pose, framed within an oval border decorated with a repeating floral motif.
Brouwer employs the technical precision characteristic of Dutch Golden Age printmaking. The artist uses varied line weights to define the textures of the subject's attire, from the delicate lace collar to the structured bodice adorned with a prominent brooch. Her hair is styled in the fashionable ringlets of the period, and she wears a simple string of pearls, reflecting the restrained elegance associated with the Dutch aristocracy of the time. The background features a fine cross-hatched pattern, which provides a neutral field that draws the viewer's attention to the subject's facial features and expression.
This work serves as a historical record of the sitter's appearance and status. The Latin inscription at the base, 'LOISA A NASSAV, VXOR MARCH: BRANDENBVRGICI', identifies her lineage and marital connection to the Elector of Brandenburg. Such engravings were frequently produced to disseminate the likenesses of European nobility, allowing their image to circulate across borders. The composition is balanced and formal, adhering to the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture. The print demonstrates the skill of the engraver in translating the nuances of a painted portrait into the monochromatic medium of copperplate engraving. It remains a clear example of the portraiture traditions that defined the visual culture of the Netherlands during this era.
