A detailed seventeenth-century engraving depicting the personification of Astronomy, featuring an armillary sphere, a celestial globe, and a telescope.
This engraving, attributed to the Dutch polymath Cornelis Jacobsz. Drebbel, depicts the personification of Astronomy. The composition features a central female figure, representing the celestial science, who gazes upward toward the night sky. She wears a prominent sun and moon pendant, symbols of the heavens. Beside her, an elderly scholar uses a primitive telescope to observe the stars, while his other hand supports an armillary sphere. A celestial globe rests beneath the woman, showing constellations and mythological figures.
The work reflects the scientific curiosity of the early seventeenth century, a period when observational tools began to reshape the understanding of the cosmos. The engraving technique employs fine cross-hatching to create depth and texture, particularly in the drapery of the figures and the metallic sheen of the scientific instruments. The Latin inscription at the base translates to a meditation on the study of the stars and the celestial spheres, reinforcing the intellectual nature of the subject.
Drebbel, known primarily for his inventions and engineering, was also a skilled engraver. This print demonstrates his technical precision and his engagement with the visual language of the period. The scene is set against a backdrop of a stone structure, providing a sense of place for this scholarly pursuit. The balance between the allegorical figure and the practical tools of the astronomer captures the intersection of classical tradition and the emerging scientific revolution. The print serves as a visual record of how the early modern mind conceptualised the heavens, blending mythology with the rigorous observation of the physical world.
