A formal portrait by Johannes Vollevens (I) depicting a military commander in a powdered wig, featuring a bold red cloak and an ornate heraldic frame.
Johannes Vollevens (I) was a Dutch painter active in The Hague during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. This portrait, titled Portret van een krijgsoverste, captures the formal conventions of aristocratic portraiture common to the period. The subject is presented in a three-quarter view, wearing a voluminous powdered periwig that frames his face. His attire includes a muted brown coat, contrasted by a striking, bright red cloak draped across his torso. The use of colour draws the eye immediately to the fabric, which provides a visual break from the otherwise sombre tones of the composition.
The painting is housed within an oval frame, a popular choice for portraiture of the era, which adds a sense of intimacy and focus to the sitter. Above the frame, a carved crest featuring three squirrels suggests the noble or heraldic status of the individual depicted. Vollevens demonstrates a clear command of texture, particularly in the rendering of the lace at the cuffs and the soft, flowing quality of the wig. The lighting is directed to illuminate the face, ensuring the sitter remains the primary subject despite the decorative elements of the frame and the bold red drapery.
Vollevens was a student of Nicolaes Maes and later became a member of the Confrerie Pictura in The Hague. His work often reflects the transition from the stark realism of the mid-seventeenth century toward the more refined, courtly style that gained popularity in the Netherlands as the century turned. This piece is a representative example of his ability to balance formal representation with the specific material details that defined the social standing of his subjects. The portrait remains a study in the conventions of Dutch elite portraiture, focusing on the interplay between personal identity and the symbols of rank.
