A formal eighteenth-century copperplate engraving by Martin Tyroff, depicting the Hereditary Count of Schaumburg-Lippe with allegorical figures.
This copperplate engraving by Martin Tyroff depicts Georg August Wilhelm, the Hereditary Count of Schaumburg-Lippe. Tyroff, a German engraver active during the first half of the eighteenth century, was known for his precise execution of formal portraiture and heraldic imagery. The work follows the conventions of aristocratic portraiture common to the period, presenting the subject within an oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth.
The composition employs allegorical figures to signify the status and virtues of the sitter. To the left, a female figure holds a cornucopia, while to the right, a second figure supports a coat of arms. These elements, combined with the heavy drapery that frames the central oval, create a sense of theatricality typical of the Baroque era. The subject is dressed in the formal attire of the nobility, with his hand resting upon a book, suggesting a balance between military or political authority and intellectual pursuit.
Tyroff uses a variety of line weights to define the textures of the fabric, the stone architecture, and the soft features of the figures. The engraving technique allows for a high degree of detail, particularly in the rendering of the heraldic shield and the folds of the clothing. The text inscribed on the plinth identifies the sitter, while the scroll held by the figure on the left adds a layer of symbolic narrative to the piece. This print provides a clear example of the formal portrait style used to document the lineage and social standing of European nobility during the mid-eighteenth century. It remains a precise record of the visual language employed by engravers to communicate power and prestige through print media.
