A detailed 1439 portrait of the artist's wife, Margaret, showcasing the technical precision of Early Netherlandish oil painting.
Painted in 1439, this portrait depicts the artist's wife, Margaret. It is a work of technical precision, characteristic of the Early Netherlandish tradition. Van Eyck employs oil paint to achieve a level of detail that was revolutionary for the period. The subject is shown in a three-quarter view against a dark, neutral background, which directs the viewer's attention to her features and attire.
Margaret wears a complex headdress known as a 'horned' wimple, constructed from fine white linen with delicate lace edging. The fabric is rendered with careful attention to its folds and texture, demonstrating the artist's ability to capture the physical properties of textiles. Her gown is a deep red, featuring a dark fur-lined collar and a black belt, which provides a contrast to the lighter tones of her headwear. Her expression is calm and direct, suggesting a sense of intimacy between the painter and the sitter.
This panel is one of the few surviving secular portraits from the fifteenth century. It provides insight into the fashion and social customs of the Burgundian Netherlands. The meticulous application of paint, layer by layer, allows for the subtle transitions of light and shadow across her face. The work remains in the collection of the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, where it is preserved as a primary example of Van Eyck's mastery of oil media. The composition is balanced, focusing on the sitter's presence rather than an elaborate setting. This approach allows the viewer to engage with the subject's individuality, a hallmark of Van Eyck's portraiture.
