Painted in 1905, this portrait captures André Derain, a close friend and fellow artist, during the summer the two spent together in Collioure. This period is recognised for the emergence of Fauvism, a movement defined by the use of non-naturalistic colour and expressive brushwork. Matisse rejects traditional modelling, opting instead for a palette that prioritises emotional impact over anatomical accuracy.
The composition is direct, focusing on the subject's head and shoulders against a simplified background. The face is constructed from distinct patches of colour, with greens and oranges applied in thick, visible strokes. These hues do not represent skin tone in a conventional sense, but rather the play of light and shadow across the features. The subject wears a red cap and a yellow shirt, both rendered with the same energetic, rhythmic application of paint that characterises the artist's work from this era.
Matisse employs a flattened perspective, removing depth to keep the focus on the surface of the canvas. The dark, sharp lines of the moustache and the contours of the face provide a structural anchor for the otherwise loose, painterly application of pigment.
