Beskrivning
A classic Renaissance profile portrait by Sandro Botticelli, depicting a young woman with elaborate braided hair and pearls.
This profile portrait, attributed to Sandro Botticelli, depicts a young woman often identified as Simonetta Vespucci. The subject is shown in strict profile, a convention common in Italian Renaissance portraiture during the fifteenth century. Her hair is styled with elaborate braids and adorned with pearls, reflecting the fashion of the Florentine elite. The composition is set against a dark background, which serves to emphasise the pale, luminous quality of her skin and the precise contours of her features.
Botticelli employs a linear style, characteristic of his work, where the outlines of the figure are defined with clarity and grace. The subject wears a red bodice with black detailing, contrasting with the cool, pale blue of the sky visible through the window frame behind her. The attention to detail in the hair, particularly the individual strands and the woven texture of the braids, demonstrates the artist's technical precision. The sitter's expression is composed, maintaining a sense of distance typical of the period's portraiture, which often prioritised idealised beauty over psychological intimacy.
This work belongs to a tradition of portraiture that sought to capture the grace and nobility of the sitter. The use of tempera on wood panel allows for the fine, smooth application of colour, contributing to the overall clarity of the image. The profile view, while traditional, allows for a clear reading of the sitter's silhouette against the dark backdrop. The inclusion of pearls and the specific arrangement of the hair suggest a high social status, aligning with the cultural context of Renaissance Florence. This print captures the refined aesthetic of the period, offering a clear view of the artist's approach to form and light.

Portrait of a Young Woman - Sandro Botticelli
Artist Biography
Sandro Botticelli
He worked in Florence under the patronage of the Medici family during the period art historians call the Early Renaissance. The Birth of Venus and Primavera, both painted in the 1480s, are his best-known works and among the most reproduced images in Western art. They are strange paintings. Venus stands on a shell, blown to shore by the wind, her body curved in a way that owes nothing to anatomical reality and everything to Gothic line. Primavera fills a dark orange grove with mythological figures whose feet barely touch the ground.
The paintings are technically tempera on canvas and panel, executed with a fineness of line that reflects his goldsmith training. The outlines are visible. The surfaces are flat compared to the oil-based modelling that Leonardo and other contemporaries were developing. Botticelli was not interested in three-dimensional illusion. He was interested in contour, pattern, and the way a line can describe both a body and an emotion simultaneously.
His later career was affected by the rise of the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola, who preached against secular art and luxury. Botticelli may have burned some of his own paintings in the Bonfire of the Vanities in 1497. Whether this represents genuine religious conversion or political self-preservation is unclear. His output declined. He died in 1510, largely forgotten, and was not rediscovered until the Pre-Raphaelites championed him in the nineteenth century.
